Located
in the little pueblo of San Gabriel in Tecomán, Colima, The Grottoes of San Gabriel are among the most spectacular places
you can visit in the amazing state of Colima. In San Gabriel are two grottoes but only one is open to the public. The state
of Colima built a metal spiral staircase that descends almost 100 feet to the bottom of the hole. At the bottom is the opening
to the grotto.
The entrance
is only 21 feet in diameter, and going down and around circles the staircase, it makes you dizzy. Once inside, the floor to
ceiling show of stalagmites and stalactites is beautiful. People say that one king of Colima (Rey Colimán), made a temple
in the grotto to save his gold and silver there. During the Spanish Conquest, Corte’s minions reportedly stole this
treasure, and they used this cave as a hiding place for their plundered cache.
The shapes of the stalagmites and stalactites are wonderful, they are around nine to 15 feet long. Each inch of stalactite
needs decades to be. I think that the time of duration is acceptable because you can imagine beautiful shapes in those grottoes.
At he mouth of the cave, you can sign a guest book, containing the names and addresses of visitors to the site from all over
the world. So, maybe you will go to the place, where famous people like Cameron Díaz, Brad Pitt and Carmen Electra use to
go for vacation. Therefore, do not think twice in coming to this special state. Colima wants to have
fun with you!.
